In the first half of the twentieth century, there arrived in our country important masses of immigrants of European origin, mostly from Italy and Spain but also from Poland, France, Ireland and Germany. Most of these people had fled their countries – given the bad economic situation and living conditions – and were in search of opportunities for improvement and progress in other destinations.
As stated by Mexican poet Octavio Paz – Nobel Prize winner for Literature-: ”Los mexicanos descienden de los aztecas; los peruanos, de los incas, y los argentinos, de los barcos”.
(“Mexicans descend from “Aztecs”; Peruvians descend from “Incas”; however, Argentine people descend from the Ships.”).
This explains why “porteños” conceive of Europe, more specifically Spain, as their mother nation.
