“Criollos” – notice the similarity with the term “creole” – were the descendants of Spanish people born in America. In the beginning, they were small in number, took part in some of the colonial, economic activities and became part of the local government administration – they participated in these activities at a much lower scale
in comparison with the “Spaniards”.
The “Criollos” were part of a privileged social group given that they were considered to be “white people” – though their “whiteness” was only parcial given the frequent blending between the Spanish and the Indigenous peoples. As the population of “Criollos” expanded, they outnumbered the Spanish and, in the end, became Buenos Aires’ ruling class. The “Criollos” now hired (mainly French and Spanish) European teachers and governesses in order to educate their children.
