“La Maga” is one of the main characters in “Rayuela,” a novel by Julio Cortázar, one of the most outstanding writers in Latinamerican literature. The novel opens doors to new realities where the weirdest situations are presented in a light-hearted and humorous fashion, which makes work a surrealist one.
“La Maga” was an independent, spontaneous and naive woman who would smoke “Gitanes” cigarettes and was in love with the colour yellow. She challenged women’s stereotype back then – “Rayuela” was published in 1963 – and became an icon of avant-garde literature. “La Maga” partook in a bohemian lifestyle, which was “plagued” with music; she would believe utopias could come true. She refused to accept the norm and created a mysterious, inaccessible and magic order out of chaos. She did not want to achieve perfection by conforming to society’s deep-rooted values, which emancipated her; it was her mystery that made her into a vital and complex woman.
Jorge Luis Borges was, together with Cortázar, one of the best Argentinian writers, to the extent of becoming one of the most renowned writers in the XX century.
Our intention is to introduce “La Maga” in the “Borgian universe” by taking into account aspects of Borges’ work – such as the dual character of people, labyrinths, libraries, knowledge and the nordic lineage. This is our way of relating the two most important Argentine writers in the XX century.
